Death of Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI died on New Year’s Eve at the age of 95, almost a decade after he stood down because of ill health. Benedict XVI became the first Pope to resign in 600 years in 2013, citing ailing health.

His last words are reported to be, “Jesus, I Love you!”

His successor, Pope Francis will preside at Pope Benedict’s funeral on Thursday 5th January.

We pray for the soul of Pope Benedict and that that he will now receive his eternal reward in Heaven.

Loving Father,

In choosing Benedict to be servant of the servants of God, we give thanks for his lasting stewardship of your Church.

May what he has led and shared continue to inspire present and future generations to do your work in our world, in the name of peace, justice and love.

Give him the reward of eternal happiness in your kingdom, united forever with your saints.

Amen

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace.

Amen
