Chinese New Year 2021

Chinese New Year 2021

12/02/2021

2021 is the Year of the Ox!

Here's a video (3:25) retelling the tale of the race which underpins the Chinese New Year!

The Ox is the second of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first.

In Chinese culture, the Ox is a valued animal. Because of its role in agriculture, positive characteristics, such as being hardworking and honest, are attributed to it.

Oxen are seen as hard workers in the background, intelligent and reliable, but never demanding praise.

The most recent Rat Years are: 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949!   Check out with your family who fits into this category!
