Standing for Global Food Justice
This week we have been focussing on how we can LIVE IN SOLIDARITY with small scale farmers.
In some parts of the world, farmers are going hungry despite being the ones who are growing the food. That may sound strange but farmers’ rights to choose what seeds they use is under threat as new laws are introduced.
Small farmers must buy commercial seeds from big companies which is good for big business profits but not so good for the farmers who grow the majority of the world’s food. THIS IS NOT A FAIR SYSTEM!
Huge numbers of farmers who are affected are women.
Generations of knowledge about farming is being lost because they are restricted in what they can grow and sell and how much it is sold for.
Instead of a variation of crops, they are restricted in the seeds they can buy and who they can buy them from.
Here at St Julie’s we have been signing the CAFOD petition that demands:
- the protection of the rights of farmers to save, use exchange and sell their own varieties of seeds
2. an end to policies the limit small farmers the choice to choose which seeds they access
