The Sunday Gospel for 7th October, 2018
This passage from Mark relates Jesus' response to a question from some Pharisees meant to trap him. He criticises the Jewish religious leaders and takes a hard line on marriage - warning what God has joined together, man must not separate. I find it a really difficult passage which seems dogmatic and unforgiving but perhaps it needs to be seen in the context of the time when men were allowed to divorce their wives, sometimes on the flimsiest of reasons. Was Jesus taking the side of the oppressed and discarded by replying in this way?
The easier section of the reading is Jesus' acceptance of children - "Let the children come to me!"
