How early? Rome
Goodness me - excited though I was, it is still a shock to the system to get up at 3:00 a.m.! Actually, I (and am sure others) didn't get much sleep. Things whirr over and over in your head so it was a restless night!
However, everyone turned up on time and we departed for our Pilgrimage to Rome at 4:30 a.m.
The first day highlight was the Catacombs and we also drove past the Quo Vadis Church. Quo Vadis is Latin for "Where are you going?" Legend has it that in the 1st century in Rome where Christians were undergoing persecution because of Nero's interesting and draconian approach to town planning, Peter - the fisherman appointed leader by Jesus - felt he had to leave to stay safe. As he was leaving the Roman city walls behind him, it is thought he met Jesus walking in the opposite direction. Peter said: "Domine, quo vadis?" "Where are you going, Lord?"
Jesus replied "To Rome - to be crucified once more!"
At that point, Peter realised his place was with the other suffering Christians and he turned round and walked back into Rome and his inevitable martyrdom!
Settling into the hotel was a breeze and things worked although we managed to trip the electrical circuits with the amount of chargers and devices that were in evidence. Anyway, that was easily resolved!
The evening meal was lovely and we made acquaintance with the local supermarket who have possibly the slowest tills this side of the Tiber.
Nonetheless, it proved an excellent first day with lots of smiles and excitement!
