The Sunday Gospel for 15.12.19

In this reading for the Third Sunday in Advent (Year A), we continue to hear about John the Baptist – who was by now in prison. John had heard about his cousin Jesus and what he was doing. He sent a message to ask if Jesus was the Messiah – the one they had been waiting for!

Jesus did not give a straight answer. He merely told them what he had been doing and that John should decide for himself – judging Jesus by what he was causing to happen. In the same way, Jesus invites us to make up our own minds about him.

Loving God,

when we think about others,

help us to to be guided in our thoughts

by the things that people do – not just by what they say.

Help us, too, to be people who bring and grow goodness.

We pray this in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN
