One of the important features of this story is that the Sadducees, who approach Jesus to ask him a question, do so in an attempt to trick him into maybe saying something that they could use against him. Their question, as you’ll hear when you listen to it, is a bit of a riddle – concerning a woman who had seven husbands!
Jesus does not answer their question directly but changes the focus to reminding them that when we die and go to be with God in Heaven, we will be different – unencumbered by our bodies, we will be like angels!
It’s interesting to note how the language of this conversation reflects a very different society back then – where males were dominant.
Perhaps this is a reading which challenges to reflect on our thoughts about life after death; what Heaven might be like; what it would be like to be in God’s presence. It’s also an opportunity to think of our own loved ones who have died.
We pray for those we love who are already with you.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. AMEN
